Why It Matters · Sandals Certified Specialist

The Agent Matters as Much as the Resort.

A Sandals Certified Specialist isn’t a marketing title. It’s a designation earned through on-property training, resort visits, and annual recertification. Our agents have walked the floors, eaten in the restaurants, and slept in the suites. When we recommend a room category, it’s because we’ve stood in it.

The difference shows up in the details: which building has the best pool access, which swim-up suite is shaded at 4pm, and which butler wing actually delivers on what the brochure promises. These are not things the Sandals website can tell you.

Jade Mountain · St. Lucia

Replace with sanctuary infinity pool + Pitons — jademountain.com press kit

Personal History · St. Lucia · The Open Room

Jade Mountain

Soufrière, St. Lucia · Infinity sanctuaries · No fourth wall · The Pitons as architecture

Nick Troubetzkoy, the architect and owner of Jade Mountain, spent years working on the design of a resort that would not obstruct the view it was built to frame. The solution he arrived at — remove the fourth wall entirely, turning each suite into a three-sided room open to the Pitons and the Caribbean — sounds simple in retrospect and was, by all accounts, genuinely difficult in execution. The structural engineering required to suspend a private infinity pool above a hillside while leaving one entire wall absent is not a problem that yields quickly.

“He removed the fourth wall. The Pitons became the architecture. The view became the room.”

The fifteen sanctuaries range from Sky Jacuzzi to the Celestial Sanctuary — 4,500 square feet, 900-square-foot private pool. Each has a dedicated butler. The food is served on a terrace where the Pitons are, once again, present. This is the correct arrangement for a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Replace with volcanic white sand cove + Pitons — Viceroy press kit

A Reporter at Large · St. Lucia · The Estate

Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort

Val des Pitons, St. Lucia · Former sugar estate · Treehouse villas · UNESCO beach cove

The land Sugar Beach occupies was, for most of the nineteenth century, a sugar estate. The cane fields are gone; the stone ruins of the estate buildings remain, incorporated into the resort with the confidence of a design team that understood that history, properly framed, is more compelling than anything a landscaper could plant in its place. The ruins appear between the villas as you walk toward the beach — quiet reminders that the ground you are on has been doing something significant for considerably longer than you have been visiting it.

“The ruins remain. History, properly framed, is more interesting than anything a landscaper could plant in its place.”

The treehouse villas are built into the canopy above the beach. The private cove is volcanic white sand, protected by the natural harbour of the Pitons, calm enough to swim without effort. The wine list at the Bayside restaurant is longer than the menu, which is the correct arrangement.

Excellence Playa Mujeres · Isla Mujeres

Replace with swim-out pool or island aerial — AMResorts press kit

Property One · Why Here: The Island

Excellence Playa Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Cancún · Adults-only · The ferry as a moat · 11 restaurants

What makes Excellence Playa Mujeres singular is not the swim-out suites, though they are exceptional. It is not the eleven restaurants, though the tequila list at Agave & Sea deserves its own essay. What makes it singular is the ferry. The resort sits on Isla Mujeres — an island — which means the only way to arrive is by boat across a channel that takes approximately twenty minutes. Those twenty minutes accomplish something remarkable: they make the resort feel genuinely remote. The channel is a psychological border, not merely a geographical one.

“The ferry takes twenty minutes. What it actually does is take you somewhere else entirely.”

The Excellence Club provides a private pool, dedicated beach, and a concierge whose assumption — that your preferences are known before you state them — becomes reality by the second morning. The butler service includes in-room breakfast, spa scheduling, and the kind of unhurried attention that used to be called, simply, good service.

Excellence Riviera Cancún

Replace with reef snorkeling or oceanfront pool — AMResorts press kit

Property Two · Why Here: The Reef

Excellence Riviera Cancún

Puerto Morelos, Riviera Maya · The original Excellence · Mesoamerican Reef · 13 restaurants

Excellence Riviera Cancún was the first. It is where the brand discovered what a genuinely excellent adults-only all-inclusive could feel like when designers stopped compromising. The property sits directly on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest coral reef system in the world — which means the snorkeling is not an amenity so much as a geographical inevitability. Pull on a mask, walk into the water, and the reef is there.

“This was where the brand discovered what it wanted to be. Every Excellence property since has been a refinement of what was first understood here.”

Thirteen restaurants operate without reservations. The spa hydrotherapy circuit is described by guests, almost without exception, as the best hour of the trip. This is high praise from people who have also been lying on a Caribbean beach for a week. The spa wins anyway.

Las Ventanas al Paraíso

San José del Cabo · Rosewood Hotels · Butler service · Private plunge pools · Pacific & Sea of Cortez views

The name translates as “The Windows to Paradise,” which is either the most accurate hotel name in Mexico or the most audacious, depending on whether you have been. The suites open directly to the desert and the sea — every room a private terrace, most with their own plunge pool, several with telescopes positioned to catch the desert sky after the guests have finished watching the Pacific turn colors at dusk. Las Ventanas is a Rosewood property, which means the service standard is old-world formal delivered with a warmth that is specifically Mexican, and specifically Cabo.

“Every room a private terrace. Most with a plunge pool. Several with a telescope pointed at the desert sky. The name, it turns out, is accurate.”

The butler here does not wait for instruction. The tequila selection is curated. The spa treatments involve local desert botanicals and take considerably longer than the guests expect, which is the correct duration. The beach is private. The two seas — Pacific and Sea of Cortez — are both visible from the upper suites, which is a geographical peculiarity that Las Ventanas mentions only in passing, as though it were not the most remarkable thing about its location.

Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal

Cabo San Lucas · Accessed through a private tunnel · Cliffside above El Arco · Pacific oceanfront

The Waldorf Astoria Pedregal has a private tunnel. This fact tends to dominate the conversation when people describe the arrival experience, and understandably so — you enter through a mountain, not around it, and emerge on the other side to find the hotel perched on a cliff directly above the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas, with the Pacific Ocean visible in every direction. The tunnel is approximately 500 feet long. The view at the other end makes the 500 feet feel like a reasonable trade. This is a property that understood, at the design stage, that arrival is part of the experience.

“You enter through a private tunnel in a mountain and emerge on a cliff above the Arch of Cabo San Lucas with the Pacific in every direction. The tunnel, it turns out, is just the beginning.”

The 115 casitas and villas are built into the cliffside, each with a private plunge pool and an unobstructed view of the Pacific. The Waldorf service standard — Personal Concierge assigned at check-in, available twenty-four hours — operates here with the particular energy of a staff that knows the setting is extraordinary and behaves accordingly. The spa uses local sea and desert elements. The restaurant, Don Manuel’s, faces directly into the sunset.

The cliff-side pool terrace at Waldorf Astoria Pedregal, positioned above El Arco — the natural rock arch that marks the precise meeting point of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. The geography here is not incidental. It is the property’s defining feature.

Esperanza, an Auberge Resort

Cabo San Lucas · Auberge Resorts Collection · Cliffside · Sea of Cortez · Farm-to-table cuisine

Esperanza means “hope,” which is either a philosophical choice or a geographical one — the resort sits on a bluff above the Sea of Cortez where the light in the morning arrives at an angle that has been described, by guests who are not given to hyperbole, as transformative. Auberge Resorts built Esperanza on the conviction that luxury and intimacy are not in tension. The property has 57 suites and residences. The staff outnumbers the guests. This ratio is not accidental.

“57 suites. Staff that outnumbers the guests. The ratio is not accidental — it is the product.”

he cuisine at Cocina del Mar is farm-to-table in the sense that the farm is actually nearby and the table is actually outside facing the Sea of Cortez. The spa uses agave, honey, and local sea elements in treatments that take longer than the brochure suggests. The infinity pool is positioned so that the horizon line of the sea appears to continue through the water, which is either an optical illusion or an argument for staying another night. It is both.

Four Seasons Costa Palmas & Punta Mita

Replace: Four Seasons press kit — press.fourseasons.com — Costa Palmas beachfront or Punta Mita overwater palapa

Four Seasons · Two Mexican Addresses

Four Seasons

Costa Palmas, Baja Sur · Punta Mita, Riviera Nayarit · Two coasts · One standard of excellence

Four Seasons operates two properties in Mexico that represent the brand at its most assured. Costa Palmas, on the East Cape of Baja, is newer — a private beach community where the hotel sits within a marina and nature reserve, facing the calm turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez. This is the Baja that most visitors do not find, which is part of its value. Punta Mita, on the Pacific coast of the Riviera Nayarit north of Puerto Vallarta, is the Four Seasons at its most dramatic — a private peninsula with two Jack Nicklaus golf courses, private surf breaks, and an overwater palapa that holds the distinction of being one of the most photographed spaces in Mexican hospitality.

“Costa Palmas is the Baja most visitors do not find. Punta Mita is the Pacific at its most dramatic. Both operate to the same exacting standard, which is the correct arrangement.”

What the Four Seasons standard means in practice at both properties: the staff-to-guest ratio is among the highest in Mexico. Requests are remembered without being written down. The children’s programme at both locations is sophisticated enough that adults occasionally attempt to join. The spa at Punta Mita operates treatments in open-air palapas above the ocean. The food and beverage programme at Costa Palmas features a seafood quality that benefits from the property’s proximity to the actual Sea of Cortez fishing grounds.

The overwater palapa at Four Seasons Punta Mita — a structure built on pilings above the Pacific that functions as a restaurant, a bar, and a persuasive argument for the Riviera Nayarit as a destination. Costa Palmas offers a quieter argument, equally convincing.

Grand Velas · Two Coasts · One Philosophy

Grand Velas Resorts

Los Cabos, Baja California Sur · Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo · Suite-only · Butler service · Grand Class all-inclusive

Grand Velas does not have rooms. It has suites. At both properties — Los Cabos on the Pacific, Riviera Maya on the Caribbean — the smallest accommodation is over 1,000 square feet. This is not a premium tier. This is what the brand considers a reasonable amount of space for a person on vacation to occupy. The philosophy is consistent across both coasts: butler service from arrival, all dining included without reservation requirements, spa access included, and a Grand Class tier that provides a private pool, dedicated beach, and the kind of concierge attention that learns your preferences faster than you can state them.

“The same philosophy on two different coasts — Pacific and Caribbean — producing two entirely different experiences of the same extraordinary standard.”

The difference between the two properties is geographical and atmospheric. Los Cabos sits in the dramatic meeting of desert and ocean — arid, architectural, the Baja mountain range behind and the Pacific ahead. Riviera Maya is jungle and reef — lush, humid, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef visible in the water beyond the beach. The suites are the same size. The standard of service is identical. The landscape is an entirely different argument for Mexico.

The Grand Class pool at Grand Velas Los Cabos, where the Baja desert meets the Pacific with a directness that photographs have not yet learned to fully represent. The Riviera Maya property offers the Caribbean as an alternative argument. Both are compelling.

Las Ventanas al Paraíso

San José del Cabo · Rosewood Collection · Where the desert meets the Sea of Cortez

Las Ventanas al Paraíso — The Windows to Paradise — earned its name honestly. The resort sits at the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez, a convergence that produces one of the most arresting landscapes in Mexico. The architecture is white adobe against red desert rock, the infinity pools face due west, and the telescope on every terrace is not a prop. The stars above Los Cabos are extraordinary. The resort was designed so you would look up.

“The telescope on every terrace is not a prop. The stars above Los Cabos are extraordinary. The resort was designed so you would look up.”

The butler service at Las Ventanas is among the most studied in the luxury segment — a personal attendant who arranges sunrise horseback rides on the beach, private tequila tastings led by a certified maestro tequilero, and dinner on a private sandbar accessible only by boat. The Sea of Cortez, which Cousteau called the aquarium of the world, begins where the pool ends.

Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal

Cabo San Lucas · Cliffside villas · Private beach · The Arch at Land’s End

The Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal occupies a private peninsula that is, technically, inaccessible by conventional means. Guests arrive through a tunnel carved directly through the rock of the Sierra de la Laguna mountains, emerging on the other side into a resort that faces the Pacific and overlooks the famous stone Arch of Cabo San Lucas. This entrance is not theatrical coincidence. It is a deliberate signal that what lies beyond the mountain is a different world entirely, and the Waldorf intends to make that case from the first moment.

“Guests arrive through a tunnel carved through solid rock. What lies beyond the mountain is a different world entirely.”

The sixty-six villas are built into the cliff face in tiers, each with an unobstructed view of the Pacific and, on clear evenings, the sea lions that congregate at the base of the Arch. The Waldorf butler — here called a Pedregal Concierge — is available around the clock and coordinates everything from private yacht charters to in-villa tasting menus prepared by the resort’s culinary team.

Esperanza

Punta Ballena, Los Cabos · Auberge Resorts Collection · Sea of Cortez cliffside

Esperanza means hope in Spanish, and the resort earned the name at its founding by the Auberge Resorts Collection with the conviction that a luxury property could sit in a desert landscape without trying to overcome it. The cacti were left in place. The natural rock formations were incorporated into the architecture. The color palette — terracotta, sand, the deep blue of the Sea of Cortez — was taken directly from the surrounding landscape and reflected back. The result is a resort that feels, unusually, like it belongs exactly where it was built.

“The cacti were left in place. The color palette was taken from the landscape and reflected back. The resort feels like it belongs exactly where it was built.”

The spa at Esperanza is built into the cliffside and draws on indigenous Mexican healing traditions — temazcal ceremonies, mezcal-infused treatments, coastal sound therapies. The infinity pool hovers above the Sea of Cortez at precisely the elevation that makes the water and the sky appear continuous. This is not an accident of topography. It was engineered, over years, to look like one.

The cliffside infinity pool at Esperanza, where the Sea of Cortez horizon is level with the water’s edge and the distinction between the two requires, on clear afternoons, a degree of attention that most guests find themselves unable to sustain for long.

Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas

East Cape, Baja California Sur · Calm Sea of Cortez swimming · Private marina · World-class sport fishing

The Pacific side of Los Cabos is dramatic — crashing surf, rugged cliffs, the kind of seascape that photographs beautifully and swims dangerously. The Four Seasons at Costa Palmas made a different choice. The resort faces the Sea of Cortez on the East Cape, where the water is calm, warm, and clear enough to see the bottom at fifteen feet. The beach is swimmable every day of the year. This is not a minor amenity in a destination that has spent decades selling an ocean its guests could not enter.

“The beach is swimmable every day of the year. In a destination that spent decades selling an ocean its guests could not enter, this is not a minor distinction.”

The private marina at Costa Palmas accommodates vessels up to 200 feet and serves as the base for the resort’s sport fishing programme — marlin, dorado, tuna, and yellowtail in waters that Ernest Hemingway fished and wrote about with the enthusiasm of someone who understood that some places are simply better than others. The Four Seasons service standard, applied in this landscape, produces something close to perfection.

Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita

Punta Mita, Riviera Nayarit · Private peninsula · Two Jack Nicklaus golf courses · Humpback whale season

Punta Mita occupies a private peninsula at the northern tip of Banderas Bay, the largest bay on Mexico’s Pacific coast. The Four Seasons arrived here in 1999, before most of its neighbors, and the early decision to build on a private peninsula with a guarded perimeter has produced an atmosphere that remains, twenty-five years later, remarkably contained. The Marieta Islands — a protected national park where blue-footed boobies nest and humpback whales breach from December through March — are visible from the beach and accessible by the resort’s private boats in forty minutes.

“Humpback whales breach in Banderas Bay from December through March, visible from the beach, accessible by private boat in forty minutes. This comes with the room.”

The two Jack Nicklaus golf courses include the famous Tail of the Whale hole — an island green in the Pacific Ocean, reachable only at low tide, which Golf Digest has called one of the most extraordinary golf holes in the world. Whether a guest plays golf or not, the image of it — a small green square of manicured grass surrounded entirely by ocean — communicates something essential about what is possible when the Four Seasons decides to build somewhere exceptional.

Grand Velas Los Cabos

San José del Cabo · Suite-only · Grand Class butler · Award-winning dining · 90,000 sq ft spa

Grand Velas does not have rooms. It has suites. Every single guest, regardless of what they paid or how long they are staying, is accommodated in a suite — the smallest of which is 1,012 square feet. This is not a premium tier. This is simply what the hotel considers a reasonable amount of space for a person on vacation to occupy. The butler service is correspondingly serious: a personal assistant, fluent in the language of anticipation, who will arrange anything the resort is capable of arranging.

“Grand Velas does not have rooms. It has suites. Every guest. This is not a premium tier. It is what they consider adequate space.”

The Frida restaurant has won more culinary awards than most chefs receive in a career. The spa — 90,000 square feet — is one of the largest in Mexico and operates on the principle that if something can be done to a person while they are lying down, it probably should be. The location, on a private beach between the Pacific and the desert mountains of Baja, is arrestingly beautiful in a way that photographs have not yet learned to replicate.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya

Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya · Three distinct Ambassadors · Jungle cenote · Caribbean beachfront · Suite-only

The Grand Velas Riviera Maya is organized into three distinct Ambassadors — Grand Class, Zen, and Family — each with its own pools, restaurants, and atmosphere. Grand Class is adults-only, set in the jungle canopy, and centers on a private cenote pool cut into the natural limestone. Zen occupies the beachfront, all clean lines and Caribbean views. The architecture moves between jungle and ocean as if the resort could not decide which landscape was more extraordinary and resolved the problem by including both.

“The cenote pool is cut into the natural limestone of the jungle floor. The Caribbean beach is three minutes away. The resort could not decide which was more extraordinary, so it included both.”

The all-inclusive programme at Grand Velas operates at a level that makes the phrase “all-inclusive” feel inadequate. Fifteen restaurants, nine pools, the Spa Ambà, and a culinary team that produces one of the most ambitious menus in the Riviera Maya. The suite-only policy applies here as it does in Los Cabos: there are no rooms. There are only varying interpretations of what a suite can be when it is built in the jungle above an ancient cenote.

The cenote pool at Grand Velas Riviera Maya, where the natural limestone formation has been incorporated into the resort rather than removed from it. The Butler: A Study in Forgotten Excellence

On old-world service, the now-now-now generation, and what it means to be attended to properly

Photography: Sandals Resorts · Butler Elite Programme

The butler as a professional figure has a history that runs considerably longer than the Caribbean resort. The word derives from the Old French bouteillier — one who tends the bottles. At Sandals Resorts, the Butler Elite programme was introduced with a formal understanding that service at this level is a craft, not a job description. Butlers are trained at the Sandals Corporate University in Montego Bay — a curriculum covering anticipatory service, wine knowledge, etiquette, and the art of reading a guest’s mood without asking them to describe it. The uniform is pressed. The timing is precise. The attention is genuine.

“The butler’s job is not to do things. It is to notice that things need doing before the guest has formed the thought. This distinction is everything.”

We live in an era of frictionless transactions — the app-ordered meal, the algorithmic preference, the review left before checkout is complete. Against this backdrop, the butler represents something the accelerating present has largely forgotten: the idea that another person’s undivided, skilled, unhurried attention is both possible and worth arranging for. Sandals understands this. Their Butler Elite graduates are not simply trained in tasks. They are trained in presence — in how to enter a room without disturbing it, how to anticipate a preference that has not been expressed. The faster-faster generation has not yet discovered this. When they do, they tend to go quiet for a moment, which is itself a kind of answer.

A Sandals Butler Elite preparing afternoon service on a private overwater bungalow terrace. The white gloves, the pressed uniform, the arrangement of the tray — each element a deliberate signal that the guest, for the duration of this stay, is the only thing that matters. This is not performance. It is conviction.

St. Regis Resorts

Where Legacy Meets Living Excellence

The St. Regis New York opened in 1904 at the instruction of John Jacob Astor IV. It introduced butler service to American hospitality. It invented the Bloody Mary at the King Cole Bar in 1934. It pioneered Sabrage — the opening of champagne with a cavalry sword — as an evening ritual. These are not marketing points. They are the credentials of a hotel that has been doing things properly for long enough that “properly” has come to mean, in certain circles, the way the St. Regis does them.

The Ritz-Carlton

Ladies and Gentlemen Serving Ladies and Gentlemen

César Ritz opened his first hotel in Paris in 1898 with a credo unchanged in 126 years: “Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen.” The Ritz-Carlton’s Gold Standards are laminated and carried in the pocket of every employee. A Ritz-Carlton employee who encounters a guest with a problem owns that problem until it is resolved, regardless of department. This is called the lateral service principle, and it is why Ritz-Carlton properties consistently outperform their competitors on the measure that matters most.

Whether the guest felt, at the end of the stay, that the hotel was on their side. It was. It always is.

César Ritz opened his first hotel in Paris in 1898 with a credo that has remained unchanged: “Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen.” This six-word sentence contains an entire philosophy of hospitality — one that positions staff not as servants but as professionals whose work is defined by its own standards of excellence. The Ritz-Carlton’s Gold Standards, laminated and carried in the pocket of every employee, include a Credo, a Motto, the Three Steps of Service, and the Employee Promise. This is not corporate culture. This is a doctrine.

“Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen. Six words. One hundred and twenty-six years. The sentence has not required editing.”

A Ritz-Carlton employee who encounters a guest with a problem owns that problem until it is resolved, regardless of whether the solution is within their department. This is the “lateral service” principle, and it is the reason Ritz-Carlton properties consistently outperform on the measure that matters most: whether the guest felt, at the end of the stay, that the hotel was on their side. It was. It always is.

Iberostar: A Family Business That Became a Global Standard

From a single shoe factory in Mallorca in 1930 to one of the world’s most awarded hotel collections. The story of Iberostar is the story of what happens when a family decides, quietly and without announcement, to be excellent at everything they do.

The Story of Iberostar

Palma de Mallorca, Spain · Family-owned · Est. 1956 · Now operating in 35 countries

The Fluxa family began in shoes. In 1930, Lorenzo Fluxa founded a footwear company on the island of Mallorca that would grow, over the following decades, into one of Spain’s most successful manufacturing enterprises. The pivot to hospitality came in 1956, when the family opened their first hotel on the same island, with the same conviction that had served them in manufacturing: that quality, applied consistently and without compromise, produces results that competitors find difficult to explain and nearly impossible to replicate. The hotel was called Iberostar. The family still owns every property in the portfolio today.

“The family still owns every property in the portfolio today. This is not a detail. It is the explanation for everything else about how Iberostar operates.”

Family ownership in the hotel industry is rarer than it sounds. Most luxury brands are divisions of public companies, which means that decisions about quality, staffing, and investment are subject to quarterly earnings reviews and shareholder expectations. Iberostar has none of this. The Fluxa family makes decisions based on a time horizon measured in generations, not quarters. This produces a consistency of standard — in service, in maintenance, in culinary quality — that guests notice without always being able to articulate why this hotel feels different from the others.

The original Iberostar property in Mallorca, where the Fluxa family’s conviction that quality applied consistently produces something competitors find difficult to explain has been demonstrated, without interruption, since 1956.

Iberostar in Spain

Mallorca · Ibiza · Tenerife · Lanzarote · The Mediterranean properties where the standard was first set

Mallorca is where Iberostar learned what it wanted to be. The island is the most visited in Spain and has, as a result, a long history of tourism ranging from extraordinary to mediocre. The Iberostar properties on Mallorca — the Selection Playa de Muro, the Selection Albufera, the Santa Eulalia — have consistently occupied the extraordinary end of that spectrum, and the reason is the same as it has always been: the family owns the land, employs the staff, manages the kitchens, and is present in the decisions that determine whether a hotel is truly excellent or merely expensive.

“Mallorca has a long history of tourism ranging from extraordinary to mediocre. Iberostar has spent sixty years at one end of that spectrum and shown no interest in moving.”

The Mediterranean properties benefit from something the Caribbean ones must replicate through effort: the genuine regional cuisine of the Balearic Islands, the local wine producers of the island interior, the fishing boats that supply the restaurant each morning. Iberostar Spain is not themed to feel Mediterranean. It is Mediterranean, which is a distinction that a single meal makes evident to anyone with a functioning palate.

The Joia Collection · Iberostar’s Premier Tier

Iberostar Selection Joia Maya

Riviera Maya, Mexico · Adults-only · Star Prestige Club · Coral reef direct access · Iberostar’s finest

Joia is a word from the Catalan language — the language of Mallorca — that means jewel. The Iberostar Selection Joia properties represent the company’s answer to a question the market had been asking for some time: what happens when a large hospitality group with sixty years of experience decides to apply everything it has learned to a single tier of properties and hold absolutely nothing back? The answer is the Joia collection, and the answer is good. The Joia Maya in the Riviera Maya is, by the assessment of nearly every serious hospitality publication that has reviewed it, among the finest adults-only all-inclusive properties in the Caribbean basin.

“Joia is the Catalan word for jewel. Iberostar chose the name carefully. The properties earn it.”

What distinguishes the Joia properties from the Iberostar portfolio more broadly is not a single amenity but a consistent elevation of every standard: the guest-to-staff ratio is higher, the culinary programme is more ambitious, the Star Prestige Club provides a private pool and beach section and dedicated concierge, and the coral reef that begins at the edge of the resort’s beach — part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — is actively managed and restored by Iberostar’s marine biologists as part of the company’s Wave of Change environmental programme. This last detail is not trivial. The reef is visibly healthier here than at most neighboring properties, and guests notice.

The Hotel That Is Actively Restoring the Sea

Riviera Maya · Punta Cana · Jamaica · Mallorca · Iberostar’s global marine conservation programme

In 2017, Iberostar made a commitment that no major hotel chain had previously attempted at scale: to achieve zero single-use plastic across its entire portfolio by 2020, to eliminate single-use plastics from all supplier relationships, and to create a marine research programme at every coastal property. The Wave of Change programme, as it came to be known, was not a marketing campaign. It was a corporate restructuring. The plastic targets were met. The marine programme now employs over forty marine biologists across the Americas and the Mediterranean, each tasked with actively restoring the reef ecosystem at their property.

“Forty marine biologists. Hundreds of coral frames. The reef at the edge of the resort is not a backdrop. It is an ongoing project of restoration and the company funds it completely.”

At the Joia Maya in the Riviera Maya, the restoration programme has produced measurable results: coral coverage in the monitored zones has increased by over thirty percent since the programme began, and fish population diversity has returned to levels not seen since the early 2000s. Guests who snorkel the house reef are snorkeling a reef that is, quite literally, healthier than it was when they booked the trip. This is what it looks like when a hotel family decides that the ocean is not a view but a responsibility.
